. thank you so much. that was fantastic what you did for us. christopher stevens was obviously an extraordinary human being and contributor. every year at stanford we have a group of what we call national security fellows come. they were roughly army, navy, air force, state department. a couple weeks ago we had a meeting and the first person i called on was an army colonel. i said where were you last? he said in libya. i said did you know christopher stevens? he said everybody knew christopher stevens. he was our leader, fluent in arabic, constructive, positive, doing something, he was our leader. this spontaneous practically eruption from him. he was a foreign service officer. anybody who has served with a foreign service as i did as the secretary of state knows, what a very special group of people this is. they are very able people. dedicated. they work hard for our country. chris was extraordinary and stood out. i thought what image can i think of that might express our way of thinking about him. i thought of the great seal of our republic. i don't know how many of you have

don't happen in washington by accident. this races the question that many of us continue to wonder about. does the president really want a result or does he want another reason to beat up republicans so he can get political advantage in the next election? >> he argued the white house plan and bipartisan negotiations shared some key elements. >> republican, this was leaked. it's also clear that it's incomplete. there's a silver lining in this which is that there are a lot of co commonalities between the two plans. >> was this intention by the white house to pressure congress at this point it doesn't matter. if the compromise doesn't happen, they will drop a political hammer on them. but if the white house did want to leak this, why would they wanted to leak this to a newspaper that couldn't publish for 48 hours? this seems like one of those things, republican white house staff is tens of people, not hundreds of people. so maybe somebody wanted to leak this but maybe not somebody in the president's inner circle. turning to the inter-republican rift. at the center of it is karl rove,

confirming now through your contacts as well that she has died. what can you tell us about what happened to her? >> well, i don't know if people may or may not be aware, but she had been doing well and things were looking up for her. she had children with a boyfriend who ended up killing himself a few weeks ago. she was struggling after that. actually was admitted herself to a psychiatric facility, and there's a cautionary tale here about the stigma of mental illness and the way in which the public attacks celebrities of which take care of themselves, and she was so fearful of the stigma and the way people were responding to her being hospitalized that she checked herself out prematurely and we have what we have. >> as i sit here looking at the picture, i am remembering a story from a while back that involved a child in custody with her? >> yes, a long struggle to regain custody of her child whom she finally just recently had custody again, and again, establishing a stable home with her boyfriend and things went off on a bad direction after he killed himself. again, i have no direct know

reportedly accused the u.s. state department of being an adjunct of the israeli foreign ministry. the speech was not recorded, but fox news has spoken to the former new jersey congressional candidate who last week tipped off lawmakers to those comments and he is standing by his climbs that that's exactly what chuck hagel said and that's not the first controversial comment the man who would like to run our defense department has made about our close ally israel. however, he's denying he said it. none the less, in the wake of the controversy, now it appears that some democrats, the president's pick, some democrats may be second guessing president obama's pick for secretary of defense. take a listen how journalist bob woodward put it on fox news sunday. >> i understand some of them eventually called the white house and said, is hagel going to withdraw, would he consider withdrawing. the answer is an emphatic no. i wonder if the democrats are kind of ever looking and asking what really is the fundamental question here, is he the best person to be secretary of defense. >> megyn: chris stirewalt h

the president told the same republicans the country expects more. >> they don't expect those of us in this chamber to agree on every issue. but they do expect us to put the nation's interests before party. chris: that was the president, michael, but historically speaking, you're the expert. why does the president speak so grandly of bipartisanship? and a new day has dawned and so many in the republican party seem to say no, tpwhever had an election. there's still a divide? >> he said because the party does not have the house. probably talking very differently if they did. the other thing, chris, especially after re-election, the opposition party is usually pretty angry they lost it. 1937 republicans tried to cut down franklin roosevelt in congress, bringing his mandate down to size. democrats try to do the same thing to richard nixon in '73, even before watergate. chris: you think it's a normal pattern? everyone agree we're watching normal intransigence? i'm watching them fight this hagel nomination so far successfully. they don't seem like they're in awe of the president at all. >

chance on choice, women's right, gay rights. a fascinating story published yesterday takes us to ohio where a conservative advocacy outfit conducts focus groups with 20-somethings who voted for obama but were deemed within reach of the republicans until they play the word association game. for republican the focus groupers say corporate greed, old, hypocritical, narrow minded, rigid, racist, out of touch, hateful, 1950s. the article says young americans don't want to join a party that's on the wrong side of history. what's a young republican 2016 hopeful to do about the boulder between the gop and the white house? for rubio tupac is one small way to differentiate himself. to say i'm not out of the '50s. i'm modern and cool. what tupac is to rubio, rubio is to the gop. he's a human band-aid on a gaping bullet hole. most of his message is not that much different from romney's failed assault on big government, but he's not an older white man so maybe this time it will work. but the gop doesn't understand that voters see through the window dressing. they see through the new face p
